Happy Days Are Here Again For Immigration Reform

Thursday, November 09, 2006

The Democrats took control of the House by a 230-205 margin, and are poised to become the majority party in the Senate as well, pending the results of the Senate race in Virginia. The Associated Press has called Virginia in favor of the Democratic candidate, Jim Webb, and news reports suggest that Republican incumbent George Allen will concede the election today. If Allen concedes, the Democrats will be the majority party in both houses of Congress, and will take control of all committees in both the Senate and the House, including those with oversight and jurisdiction over immigration policy.

Although, most of the Immigration Reforms topping the headlines talked about the Guest Worker Program that would allow millions of undocumented aliens to become legal again, there are many other important reforms that can now get back on the agenda. For example, an increase in annual visa quotas. Many would be legal aliens are currently stuck in their home countries waiting for a visa to become available. With the current annual caps on many visas, many applicants are stuck in visa back logs.

If these quotas were raised then those wanting to enter the US legally, often with job offers can enter within a reasonable time. Many family based applicants are also waiting years for their green cards to come through. Can you imagine waiting 12 years for your sibling's visa to be processed, some outstanding applicant ions predate modern computers.  For families from Asia, they are having to wait an average of 20 years to get their siblings in. It's not surprising when faced with this reality there is so much fraud and undocumented immigration. Comprehensive immigration reform would address these quota issues end the suffering for thousands of would be legal immigrants.

Europe is growing stronger each year with it's very flexible immigration policy and pretty soon America's prominence as the world's leading economy will be gradually eroded as China's economy booms at an astounding rate and countries such as India and Pakistan to the same in high tech industries. America cannot keep its head in the sand and ignore what's going on in the rest of the world, pretty soon it will be too late. So let's get this Comprehensive Immigration Reform back on track. President Bush only yesterday said he would support it.
